Microhistories of the Holocaust – methodology, sources, challenges, impact
Lodz (Poland) 18-22 September 2023
Polish Center for Holocaust Research in cooperation with Center for Jewish Research, University of Lodz
We would like to invite those working in the field of Holocaust research and documentation to submit their application for the international EHRI Seminar: Microhistories of the Holocaust – methodology, sources, challenges, impact to be held by Polish Center for Holocaust Research in cooperation with Center for Jewish Research at University of Lodz, 18-22 September 2023 i Lodz (Poland)
The Seminar is organized within the framework of the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI) project, supported by the European Commission.
The Seminar will combine two topics: methodology of microhistory in Holocaust studies as well as the transmission of knowledge from researchers to educators, memory projects and the general public. We want to discuss the methodological challenges relating to the Holocaust microhistory research and approaches to sources, including ways to use different materials, not only in traditional research but also combined with digital humanities tools. Additionally we want to focus on relations between researchers and the wider public – how history influences the local communities in various ways and how to ‘translate’ research findings into common knowledge. The discussions and presentations will be supplemented by on-site tours in Lodz and Chelmno.
The Seminar is especially addressed to graduate and postgraduate scholars from a variety of disciplines and will be a unique opportunity to share experiences, discuss challenges in Holocaust research and enhance future cooperation.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Microhistory research in the field of the Holocaust in Poland
- Problems with sources, research and interpretations
- Unknown and unused sources as a research base
- Different approaches to the topic – documents, oral history, archeology, media studies
- From research to dissemination– how to use materials for a wider public?
- How history impacts local communities?
