We mourn Nechama Tec

We mourn with sadness Prof. Nechama Tec, who was with the Center for many years. A member of the Scientific Council of the annual "Holocaust Studies and Materials".
With great sadness we have learned of the passing of Prof. Nechama Tec, a sociologist associated for many years with University of Connecticut in Stamford and also a member of the Scientific Council of our yearbook "Holocaust. Studies and Materials” since its first issue. She has also been a member, among others, of the Scientific Council of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and YIVO and has received numerous honorary doctorates and awards. In her books and articles on various aspects of the Holocaust, Nechama Tec - thanks to her combination of a unique Survivor's perspective and a sociological scientific workshop - offered pioneering methodological insights that have inspired and continue to inspire generations of researchers. In an interview with Professor Malgorzata Melchior, published in “Holocaust. Studies and Materials” in 2008 (no. 4), she said: "I always warn my students that it is not the numbers that should count, but what kind of material we have, from a variety of sources, and how they relate to each other. You need as many sources as possible, and you need to include all of them. Do not hide anything. Show as many different aspects as possible. Present different categories, different groups. Use your own definitions. Look at the data collected, analyze them systematically, step by step, and search... as long as time allows."
She will remain in our memory smiling, as on the photos from one of the Center's seminars.
We would like to remind you of the interview with Prof. Nechama Tec conducted by Małgorzata Melchior >>>
